Back at Hilton Head!

Hi Gang,

We're already halfway through Karin's workshop and are enjoying it very much! Sandy has been no problem at all, so we can focus on painting.

Here's the painting we all did from Karin's reference picture:

"Studying"

 8x10
oil on masonite

Finally I have been able to take some time and do what I want!  I have loved this little girl from the moment I saw her. She had an interesting look on her face. Looks like she wasn't sure about having her picture taken.  I changed the background just for fun. I really enjoyed this challenge. Thanks Regula.

Balinese Girl

This month it was my turn to decide on the theme for our Hilton Head Group Monthly Challenge, and I - totally selfishly - challenged the gang to pick a photo I posted on my Singapore Journal to paint from.

I'm amazed at the paintings that have already been posted here, they are great and bring back so many happy memories - I just love this challenge and am looking forward to more posts to come!

And of course I finally got back behind my easel and got to paint one of my photos as well. I've been away for a while and like always it's rough going. Still, I enjoyed painting this young Balinese girl.

Singapore challenge

Having to post after John Singer Sargent is intimidating, to say the least.
This is my painting for the Singapore challenge that was suggested by Regula, who had just spent time there.
I find smiling people difficult to paint.  I tried to capture the joy on her face. I bet she has a deep chuckle.

John Singer Sargent via Sherrie H...

Sherrie sent these and asked me to post them.  It is a portrait done by Sargent and housed in the permanent collection in the Montgomery Museum of Art in Montgomery, Al.  She sent close ups so we can see how Sargent handled hands and facial features.  Love seeing his work!

Babushka

Babushka, one of my favorite words, but I really never get to use it. So I'm thrilled to paint this little girl who is wearing what I call a babushka! (I think this might be Regula's sister at age 6. Is that right Regula?) I guess I chose one she posted that wasn't really from Singapore. I hope it still counts!

This is my entry in the Hilton Head Gang challenge for August.   Regula Scheifele was tasked with introducing this months challenge.  She had the great good fortune to be able to visit Singapore for three months and chronicled her visit in her Singapore blog.  The instructions are to visit her blog and paint any of the pictures she posted interpreting them any way we choose.  Since I love painting people and it IS Regula's challenge I decided on a picture of her dining at one of the fabulous eateries she discovered while there.   I must say she did blog a lot about food...

Where I Live - Rhode Island

This painting was from a photo taken from my front porch.  I live on the Sakonnet River in Rhode Island, and I could just sit, mesmerized by the boats going back and forth.  The time of day is when the sun is sinking below Aquidneck Island (where Newport is), leaving the sky orangey-pink, my favorite time...

Where I Live Challenge

Cloud Gate
6 x 6 oil on panel

Well, this isn't exactly where I live. But I do consider myself in the Chicagoland area! This is Cloud Gate at Millennium Park in Chicago. Also known as the "Bean". I found this to be quite a challenge.

Where I Live Challenge

This is on our farm in Fairfield County, South Carolina.  My two girls grew up hunting here - deer, turkey and doves - and my husband cut and bailed coastal bermuda hay for many years.  There is a small pond and the grandchildren are learning to fish.  A lot of memories have been made here.  Betsy

JKo Lives Here

I moved to Kiawah permanently 5 years ago.  My children grew up here as this is where we had our "American" home while living overseas.  Here is a painting of the view off our back deck.  I call it "Back Forty".  My husband likes to pretend that the golf course in  the distance all belongs to him!

On my easel right now

I love posts of what is on your easel so I thought I would jump in with my latest...

My little ballerinas visited last weekend and I took lots of source photos!  I love this one of little Lucy sitting on the stairs all tuckered out from dancing.  I love her hand up on the rail and body position.

I have to fix her angled leg and then add in the darks and lights and really punch up that tutu...my favorite part.  It is a 16 x 20 on ray mar panel.

Where I Live!

Where I live
 12 x 12
Oil on Raymar Panel

Not EXACTLY where I live...but close.  I must admit I came to this area kicking and screaming...  But after almost two decades I absolutely love living here.  There is so much to do and see...never a dull moment.  And the tourists do provide lots of sources and inspiration for my artwork!

The painting that Maria posted for me two days ago is titled "The View from the Dock at Cinder Creek"  It is my answer to the challenge that the Hilton Head Gang put out recently.  It was painted en plein air on the island of Kiawah in South Carolina. I couldn't figure out how to post it, but thanks to Maria, I am now an official "blogger" !!I shall now post another view of Cinder Creek done just yesterday!  HHG member Judy Elias  This is titled "The Preserve"

"Where I Live" Posting

This is a 6 x 6 oil painting of the North Georgia Mountains. It was created as a commission for a couple who were transferred to Houston. They wanted a painting to remind them of the area. This scene is about 1 hour from where I live in Atlanta.
